Newbie to Mercury Outboards

Hey there
I have recently bought a Mercury Mariner 40M (attached to a Shetland 535) and have a couple of questions. I am just going through changing the impeller, and that is going fine, and am just waiting for the bits to change the oil. Bt, what is the Wash screw for on the lower section? Also, its really hard to pull the starter rope bit (I am sure it has a name). I am not a small guy, but I can't pull it out as easily as I would say a lawn mower. (I know the engine is bigger, but I don’t think it should be this hard to fire!). The motor has not been started for about 18 months, if that helps.....

The engine serial number would help. Are you talking about a screw w/a washer on it? The lower unit will have an oil vent screw (w/washer) and the same below it known as the oil drain.

Remove the spark plugs and squirt a little 2 cycle oil into each cylinder to see if that makes it easier to pull the rope. If it does then the engine compression is what is resisting your pulling efforts.

will try the oil thing tonight.
The screw in question actually has the word 'Wash' above it. The screw is located about 1 inch above afe forward of teh Oil Level screw. There are 4 srews that look like various sump screws. The 'Wash' screw is at the top, then the Oil Level screw, then the Oil Fill screw, and then another un labelled scew is at the bottom. If I can attach Pics to the site, I will this evening. Thanks again.

The labels are worn away, but that seems to be all that is actually stamped on it.

The screw is to wash out the cooling system. It is designed for a hose adapter to thread in to it. If it is stuck or you can't get an adapter, and you are using your motor in real dirty and need to flush it, you can use muffs or a trash can.
