newbie question

hello and thankyou i hope for the help

i have a 1970 merc 50 hp model 500 i do not know if their is a lock to hold your motor down so it does not rear up when i put it in reverse i have looked and cant find the lever.i must sound like a idiot but i need help... so thanks in advance to anyone who can help me....
 
thank you 4 your responce well if it rears when i put into reverse what is the mechanism called that is not locking it down
 
It's 'automatic' when it's working. Try this: Lift the motor up and have someone shift from F to N. Note the motion of the 'hook' as it tries to grab the tilt pin. It should move down as the motor goes to Neutral (and reverse). If not, the cams in the tower/ LU are missing, or there's other problems. Sometimes the hook is frozen due to rusting and doesn't want to move.
