I'm a new boat owner. Just bought a 2001 Bayliner Capri Classic 1950. I started the boat in my driveway to familiarize myself with some of the motor operation before putting in the water (I used a dual flow motor flusher/ears to keep the engine cool). The motor starts and runs fine. But when I try to put into gear, I hear a metal "clunk" sound from the drive that immediately makes me stop. I've not been able to put into gear for fear I am doing something wrong. The sterndrive in not completely down (mostly but not completely). Is that likely the problem? I know everything worked properly when I purchased the boat. I'm guessing I am doing something incorrectly.

It should never grind when shifting into gear IN THE WATER!!

Either your clutch dog or gears engagement teeth are worn or cable adjustment/linkageis worn or in need of replacement is in order or shift it quicker..............

I think it was just a problem of being out of the water makes the noise more noticeable, and I was shifting far too slowly. Had it in the water last night and everything worked fine.
