Newbie Q's - Where to begin??!?1

Hi all,

I am brand new to the forum and fairly new to the outboard scene. I recently bought a cabin that came with an older Johnston 4.4 HP outboard. I have had troubles finding a serial or model # yet, but i estimate it to be late 70's early 80's

The motor looks in great shape, but has sat for ~5 years. I changed the plugs and got new gas, but its not firing up. I have spark, but beyond that im not sure where to go. I am a decent DIY car guy, just out of my element in the outboard world.

Is there a trouble shooting guide or step by step that i can walk through? where would i start to look at this to get her running?

sorry for the newbie questions but any help or direction would be great!!!

thanks all

What is the model number of that engine?

Sitting that long..... the carburetor is fouled, gummed, clogged. Remove, clean, and rebuilt it as needed with a complete carburetor kit.

Sorry guys, its a 4 HP, not a 4.4 photos attached.

About an 1986 model. It's a deluxe because of the gearshift. Do what joe said clean the carb very well. Fuel needs to be mixed at 50-1 and change the lower unit gear lube with 80w90 marine gear lube.
