"Hi all, I have a 1991 19' bluewater with what i think is a AQ290? lol, first off, how do I now which model I have?
I originaly had starting problems and thanks to searching on this board and buying a manual i traced the problem back the the ignition. I have always had problems flushing my engine, it seemed to never suck in the water, but running it in water it never had a problem. Anyway yesterday i took the boat out (salt water) and i could not get the boat going very fast before hearing a bogging sound and the engine realy heating up. I checked the exhaust risers and hoses and they were warm. actually hot, (these are new) so I let the boat idle and it cooled back down.
I ran it for a while going very slow trying to figure out the problem but came up with nothing.
When i got it home i went to once again try and flush the engine,,,,, wont suck it in.
So I looked a bit closer to find the raw water union (http://www.marineengine.com/parts/part_details.php?pnum=SIE18-2778&returntopage= 80240788.htm)
to be rotted away and the main hose disconnected.. There was debris from the union inside the hose as well.
So i think this is my problem, what i wanted to know is if my boat does not have a strainer, and some of the rotted union got into the exhaust risers and where ever else.. How do I clean or flush this out before it does more damagae?
I also reconnected the hose to what was left of the union to see if it sucked water in and I found water to squirt out the other side where the raw water hose is inside the engine compartment. Is it plugged?

Thanks for any advice in advance."

"It seems to me that what you have is a 205 HP, 4.3 liter V-6 engine (431A or 431B) with an SP or DP drive (which is basically an updated 290). You can download a brochure from here (type 431A under "engine type")

http://www.volvo.com/volvopenta/global/en-gb/marine_leisure_engines/engines/out_ of_production_engines/out_of_production_engines.htm

No idea if your boat has a strainer or not (it probably does not have one), but I cannot see bits of the corroded hose connector blocking the cooling passages; and if they do, they will disintegrate fast due to galvanic reaction.

If water is squirting inside the engine compartment on the suction side of the pump, my guess is that either the hose is perforated (cracked) or there is a loose connection somewhere (hose clamp, etc).

Hope this helps."

"I was told when i bought the boat that it is a 431 190 hp. But that could be wrong. It is a dual prop.
I tried posting a pic of the engine and will again.
Thanks for the help. I was very afraid that the new exhaust risers and elbows i put in would have to come off to clean out the crud. It actaully was not part of the hose but the union itself, i think it is lead but not sure. it crumbled in my had but there was enough meat left to re-clamp the hose to it.
I will check out the hose and connection on the engine compartment side.

Thanks"
