New wiring harness, Where do they go?

I have a '76 40 hp Mercury mod. 402 2 cyl. whose wiring harness has fallen apart. I have most wires connected, however the old harness has a wire coming from the plug going to the terminal block. The new harness instructions say nothing of a wire going to the term. block. The only wire long enough to reach the block is 18awg red but the instructions say that it goes to POS of rectifier and (may not be needed). Can you help?

IF your motor has a charging coil, the red wire goes to it. If not, tape it.

Have you got a wiring diagram for that motor? If not, you can download one from the Mastertech site.
