New water pump kit installed.....won't pump water!

So I installed a new water pump kit in me 35 Johnson J35qleca and it wont pump water. I've installed many water pumps over the years and never had this problem. What could I have done wrong? Couple questions...I don't want to run engine too long waiting for water out of the tell tale. How long can I let it run? I noticed that this water pump has no water tube...is that right? It seems like the "grommet" is supposed to just mate with the mid section tube...right or wrong? Any other advice would really be appreciated! Thank you.
 
Also I wonder how badly the other impeller was broken apart and maybe some chunks got up there and plugged things off?
 
Thanks guys. I got it pumping. The old impeller actually looked pretty good. Took it apart. I had the gasket on backwards. Don't know how that could have made a difference. The stainless puck that the impeller sits in didn't fit real good and either did the grommet on top. I switched those out for the old ones. Now it pumps great! Cheap China junk!
 
Yup. I am very careful when using the Chinese aftermarket, some is accurate/decent but some is pretty sad. Just put a Chinese water pump kit in a 1998 Yamaha 8 horsepower yesterday and everything fit real well however they did not include a drive key....?
