"First I want to say what an awesome site you guys have.
2000, 35hp, Johnson
I installed a new water pump. Everything went together smoothly, but when I put it on the hose, there is no water from telltale. Started the engine, and still nothing. only ran engine about three seconds.Nothing. Pulled it back apart, and blew air thru water tube.
I didn't see a tube that would go into the pump from the engine. It has a grommet that seems to fit tight against the bottom of the water tube.
should I be able to see water from the telltale without starting the engine? Am I missing something? Thanks in advance,

Wade"

"Well...

This sounds very similar to what Dan Catherman just went through.
Search on his name and read the long post.
Try the usual stuff first. Impeller "sweeping" when driveshaft is turned clockwise. Impeller key locking the impeller to the driveshaft properly. All seals installed in their correct position. The parts list shows two different grommets depending on your model number. Make sure you have the right grommet. Somehow, make sure the grommet is sealing tight up against the water tube opening.
As for your question...will telltale spray water when hose connected, but engine not running...I do not know the answer to that one.

Also, I have had very "iffy" intermittent problems when running my engine on a hose. Try putting it in a trash can submerged deep enough to cover the water pump. Se if it is different.

Read that Dan Catherman post. He really went thru it...and there was no real solution..."

"I guess we are talking a 3-cy

"I guess we are talking a 3-cylinder 35, where the top of the pump needs a pressure sealing against the leg for the water to get up.
As for water out of tell-tale when muffs are hooked and engine not running - hopefully NOT, or Your impeller is not sealing properly or spinning at the drive shaft.
If it was pumping water before You had the gearcase down and not now -the only option is that You have missed out something in the re-assembly of pump and gearcase."

"Thanks for the replies. It is

"Thanks for the replies. It is a 3 cylinder. I am going to put it in a barrel as suggested. What is a safe time to run without seeing water from telltale while in barrel? Also, what I thought was a thermostat is a temp. switch. Does this model have a thermostat?
Model no. J35TEL3SSB"

"Thermostat is behind the big

"Thermostat is behind the big 'nut' on top of cylinder head. Use the plug wrench and unscrew.
If engine is in a barrel and pump is submerged, put Your hand on top of engine after start. When it smells bacon You have been running too long!"

"Found the thermostat. Submerg

"Found the thermostat. Submerged foot in a barrel.
Started engine.---Worked like a champ.---
May not have had a problem all along, just need to be submerged rather than on muffs.

Thanks again for the quick responses."
