New Volvo 50 GXI Motor Overheating

"Recently installed twin VOLVO

"Recently installed twin VOLVO petrol EFI 5.0 GXI engines. On the 1st testrun with larger 9ton duo props we didn't have any problems for our short trial and revs got up to 5,500rpm. The props were changed as VOLVO factory recommend but on 2nd trial one engine suddenly overheats to 280degrees at 3-4,000 revs (4,000RPM being top speed now) and shuts down. Mechanic says there's no problem with the thermostat or impeller & is talking about taking the risers off. I suspect it could be a manufacture problem where the headgasket has not been correctly punched out in packaging. Any thoughts as it is driving me mad!!! No help from VOLVO, only remarks about I shouldn't own a boat."

"Thank you very much, will mention this to the mechanic tomorrow. Can't believe I am still having troubles after installing 2 new motors plus new sterns. Thought it would be trouble free."

"I think you are severely overloading your engine. The maximum speed rating for the 5.0GXI is 4600-5000 RPM, so you should be able to reach 4600-4800 RPM at WOT when you are using the right propellers. If you are getting only 4000 RPM, then your propellers have too much pitch for your application."
 
Forgot to ask: are you trimmin

Forgot to ask: are you trimming the boat adequately? The wrong trim angle can also lead to lower engine RPM and subsequent overload.
