Just got my first outboard motor 15 hp evinrude, racer 1 told me its an 1986 by the mod #. I started it in a barrel of water an let it run for about 30 minutes, sound ok for what I know but had some oil spots in the water when I shut it off. All this is new to me so any help on what I should do to check out the engine I would be very thankful. I plan to use it on a 14 ft jon boat in the river. Thanks

Did you check to see if you have water in your gear oil? If there's no leak there then the oil you see in the barrel is probably just the normal amount of un-burnt 2 stroke motor oil in my opinion.

One of the most often asked questons. It's the oil you put in the gas. It has gone through the engine and done it's job. Some burns and the rest goes out the exhaust. Completley normal.

Did you actually get the model number off of the plate that's attached to the port side transom bracket?

What is the model number?

I have a 2001 75HP OB Mercury Motor, Ser. # 0T538922 It has not had any major work since new and of course was very hard to get started. Probably had bad gas and carb jets clogged. Once running at mid-RPM'S seemed to run ok? When ever I put into gear, lift or lower the motor, the motor died. I also discovered that I could go to the point that the cable cluster entered into the motor twist or bend the cluster and the motor would die. My neighbor a car mechanic, says I probably need to rebuild the carbs? My layman's thought I must have a electrical problem since it shuts down pretty fast. Question do I have one or two problems?? The carb kits are very expensive and I do not want to go that route if a electrical short is the problem. The motor seemed to run pretty smooth when warmed up, could the bad carbs or a fuel issues shut me down this fast from a moderate RPM?? The car mechanic says i could. Please, if anyone out there can give me advice or technical help I will be forever grateful. If the is any other online source for help for me. This time of year all boat repair places are backed- up and expensive!! Thanks to you in advance whomever you may be.

Also forgot may be a dumb question, I am using the battery for the trolling motor to start the 15 hp evinrude, will the evinrude recharge the battery when running, if not is it ok to leave motor hooked up too the battery while using the trolling motor?

No it will not charge the battery if you run the trolling motor off of it. You have a 5 amp alternator that is basically capable of keeping a battery charged. You would have to run around at wide open throttle for hrs to charge a battery back up. I live in WI so I change my lower unit lube every fall.

Ask the mod to move this to the right section. Dont just ask your question on somebody elses thread. It is kind of rude.

Want-2-be....... E15ECUD is a 1987 15hp Evinrude, not a 1986.

OMC's code is the word INTRODUCES whereas each letter stands for a number... I=1, N=2, T=3, etc etc. The "CU" within the model number lists the year.

E = Evinrude
15 = Hp
E = Electric
C = 8
U = 7... (8 & 7 = 87 = 1987)
D = Factory run number, of no consequence.
