"I picked up a 35 HP Merc about 17 years ago and put it in storage....it only had the battery cables and I didn't know anything else about it.

It's number is 0A998598 which I believe is an '86. I would like to get it running or at least see if it's worth getting running but I don't have the controls or wiring harness/ignition/key. Will the controls from an '84 merc #6530994 fit my motor?

Also, can anyone tell me if this motor needs a separate oil mix unit or can I just mix oil in the fuel? There are two connections on the aft end of the fuel pump that don't have any hoses connected to them...should I be concerned?
THanks for any help. I'd like to get some knowledge before having it serviced locally."

"pre-mix is the way to go, if the engine wrap/front cover said oil injected then it was probably removed. The controls will work from a 84. I haven't looked up your year but I know they will work, I have 2 of these engines. The only thing you will be missing is the overheat warning worn on the control box, if your engine is so equipped. You need no controls or wiring to start the engine, the ign is hot with the wiring harness disconnected. Just hook main leads to battery and jump the starter solenoid or tape the ends and pull start.

"The oil injection was an Auto-Blend and should be removed. The controls are the same. Except for the hot horn.

There should not be any open connections on the fuel pump. There is a line running from the carb, and a line running from the tank connector, and a line running to the block. "

"Thansk JB and Bandit for the information, I appreciate it. Bandit, on the fuel pump there are two ports forward, one for the fuel line that comes from the filter assembly, and one that goes to the carb. But toward the aft end of the pump there are two more ports both look like they accept a hose, I'm assuming they are for the oil. I'll have to take a closer look. Thanks again guys."

"Andy, those two other ports were not for the oil. This motor would have had an auto-blend system.

It was fed directly from the gas tank, to the auto-blend system which then fed the gas line (with the mixed fuel/oil) up to the fuel connection on the motor.

I have looked and read through my manuals and do see what you are talking about on the fuel pump, but can not find their purpose or function (if any) explained anywhere....."

"Thanks for at least confirming that I'm not crazy. I don't have the motor in front of me or I would have taken a photo. I just thought that there were a couple of hoses missing from the motor, and because I didn't have an oil system, I thought they might be for that. Maybe someone else would know but I'm not going to get too concerned....thanks again!!!"
