New to boats but I have experience wrenching on cars. I have a totally noob question. I have a 1996 Sea Ray 175 with a Mercruiser 3.0LX Alpha Series motor, not sure about outdrive information.

What engine oil and gear oil for outdrive would people recommend?

I bought this boat last week and it runs pretty good but when I goto idle after running it the engine stumbles and cuts out. I have added seafoam to the gas and changed plugs and plug wires. I also cleaned the air intake housing.

Any other recommendations?

I honestly searched the forum but nothing comes up when you search for "engine oil."

Thanks

Gear oil..........mercury high performance gear oil, purplish green in color.....period

Motor oil.........mercs 25-40 is OEM. mobile 1 15-50 otherwise

Engine idle should be set to 650-700 rpms in gear when warmed up to normal operating temp, ~ 150 - 160 degrees.

Look for vacuum leaks if it still wont idle otherwise it may need carb work.

Also when shifting a mercruiser it must be done swiftly and firmly both into and out of gear. When shifting out of gear (forward or reverse) you activate a shift interuptor switch, If you shift too slowly out of gear you can stall the engine. It must be done somewhat quickly.

Ayuh,... I agree with kghost, 'cept I use Mobil 1, or Pennsoil 75W-90 Syn. hypoid gear oil...

It's 'bout the same as the Merc. stuff, without the color dyes...

For yer runnin' problem,.. Change the fuel Filters...

I went ahead and purchased a service manual from this site but before it gets here can someone tell me the capacities of the crank and the outdrive so I buy enough oil for each.

Thanks

Thanks for the help guys. I got the fluids changed last night and cleaned out the fuel line screen (what a mess that was). Should run much better this weekend.
