Got a new lower shift cable that is supposed to install from the aft side of the bell housing instead of the front like that old cable. I have the 1/4" X 18 tap. Question is : the threads from the old nut go all the way through that hole, do i just re-tap through those threads from the aft side? Will that work?

Re: New shift cable install

Did you get the straight tap or the tapered pipe tap?
If you have the straight tap things will be easy, just start
the tap from the front side. If you have the tapered one
you have to take it slow because you can make the hole to large.
You will need to keep checking the depth by installing the cable.
You don't want The fitting on the cable to bottom out against the bell housing,
you need to leave one or two threads showing for proper adjustment.

Re: New shift cable install

The manual read" No more that 2 threads visable" ,otherwise you will have trouble with reverse adj.

Re: New shift cable install

I have the regular tapered tap. I'll just be really careful not to go to deep. So BT, I have to get the new bolt in far enough that 1 or 2 threads are visible. Thanks for the tips guys.

Re: New shift cable install

One other thing BT, you recommended I get the new style shift cable for the alpha gen II. It did not come with a support tube, and the new cable is slightly thicker than the old one. Does it even need the support tube? It seems like the cable is stronger than the old one.

Re: New shift cable install

no tube needed ,no cutting to size either. A lot better cable.manual say "no more that 2 threads". Would be better to get the 1/4 - 18 NPST. A tapered one can be used very carefully. Could even remove a few threads off the tap where it tapers.
