new problem!!!!!

ok so i just fixed my motor had the boat for the test run every thing was going great!!! then it was like the boat juat went in to neutral??????

i quickly backed off the shifter but was very had to get back in to neutral???
then i tried to put in gear again herd the normal clunk of it going in to gear but i could only go like 2mph??? same in reverse...

it was like it would only partialy ingage!!!!!!!!

So should i start crying or could it just be the cable?? or the actual shifter???

btw when it reved up while in gear there was no Bang or anythiung like that just all of a sudden its like it went in to neutral??????

try a different prop or run a line of nail polish thru the center of the prop let dry and after running it in the water if the line don;t match up the prop spun.

Pray it's that. If the motor overheated then it's the coupler. Motor got to come out for that.

Did you smell rubber, what year and drive is this ? look behind the motor see small pieces of rubber smell rubber burning ?

omg....... this does not sound so good :( well im not sure how it would have over heated???
temp gage stayed at 140... and i know for sure its works

in any case it is a 1986 alpha 1

ok so can a prop just spin like that??? for no reason?

rubber hub yes.plastic hub,no.
WITH THE MOTOR OFF
Shift into fwd gear , prop should lock counterclockwise, turn prop and see if shaft turns behind engine , Yes= coupler, No= outdrive

well i guess im up **** creek as when it happend i did just that i put the boat in fwd, spunclock wise locked counter clockwise,

i will check if the shaft spins and report back... is there a better of the 2 coupler or out drive?

ok couldnt sleep so i went and did the suggested test.. makred the drive shaft spun the prop and the shaft didnt move at all.......
now what.....

thanks guys for all your help... belive or not your making a ****y experiance a lil better with all your advice!!!

sorry forgot to mention when i spun the prop there was a slight clunking sound comming from the lower unit dont know if that is at all helpfull

Using hand pressure going clockwise when if fwd is normal ,it should lock going counterclockwise. It`s when you stand on a blade that you look inside the boat to see if the input shaft turns.

yeah it locks counter clockwise and spins clock wise, the boat is a 278 chaparral xlc co i cant see the shaft when moving the prop so i marked it when i did this and the shaft did not move at all not even a 16th of an inch..

so am i doing it right or am i confussed?

lol i dont know if this will help either but i can spin my prop with 1 finger when its in fwd and since its in the water lol if i stood on it i would go for a swim.... lol

ok so after reading all i could on spun hubs and couplers.. i will give a better detailed account as you guys seem to thrive on detail...lol

so i was cruising along at 4400 rpm when all of a sudden i lost forward motion and the rpm jumped up,, dont knw how much i just herd the jump and grabed the throtle..
shifted to neutral..

no buring rubber smell and boat did not over heat on my 1 and 1/2 hour trip back to marina in fwd 1200 rpm..

any faster would lose what littel speed i had and would just rev the rpms..

i have checked for rubber and or metal debris around coupler none what so ever
when boat is in fwd i can spin the prop clockwise with 1 finger and the drive shaft will not turn

so does this help clarify the issue as i noticed that with a spun coupler there would be definite signs Ie: smoke, rubber smell, ruber / metal debris engine over heating

lol hoping for the best :)

thanks guys

hey so indeed it was a spun prop!!! lol and as luck would have when i put a new one and went to test it....... lol my shifter control striped....so shot down to the local shop and picked up a new one :) for $200

anyway thaks guys so much for all your help and advice !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
