New Power Head

" I am new to this, so please

" I am new to this, so please forgive me if my question is dumb. I have a 1989 mercury 80hp outboard. It has lost a lot of power over the last 2 years. I am considering having it rebuild, but at the same time I would like a biger motor. The boat is rated for 125hp. Can a 125hp power head be put on my existing lower unit, or can my motor be upgraded to produce more power with a rebuild.

thank YOu "

"Ken, I do not know about you

"Ken, I do not know about your motor, but there is a bit of interchangability in the 4 and 6 cylinder inline motors from about 1972-1989. In addition, there are rebuilders on the web who do this stuff all the time. Here is an email of a guy who specializes in the inline six motors. He should know the answer and may fix you up. Good luck and tell me how it comes out!

" Ken,
The gears in your lowe

" Ken,
The gears in your lower unit are for the 3 cylinder 80 you have now. You can put the 4 cylinder 125 powerhead onto your mid housing but you will have to put the gears from a 4 cylinder 100, 115, or 125 into your lower unit to get the correct ratio. Probably cheaper to buy a bigger motor unless you can do the work yourself.
