"Greetings! I am the new &#40

"Greetings! I am the new (and second) owner of a 1958 Evinrude Four-Fifty 50hp. The serial number is 50012-02937. Right now, the motor is at a shop for a tune-up and wire replacement. (Most of the engine wiring is cracked and damaged with age.) Also, the lower unit seal and water pump are being replaced as well. As this is my first motor, what helpful advice might you have for me? Thanks!"

I suspect the awful smell is because of the 30-weight motor oil Evinrude wants you to mix with the gas. I've asked an Evinrude shop if there's an alternative.

NO the smell is due to the fac

NO the smell is due to the fact that the motor is super in -efficient and it is partially burned fuel.As I said it uses/ wastes a lot of fuel.Nothing to do with the oil.

"oh the glorious smell of a 2

"oh the glorious smell of a 2 stroke, you will enjoy the 4-50, does use lots of fuel and has lots of power for the age. to not-a-student, thanks fo refreshing my memory about motor, made me look through old photos and remember i had one of these back in the 70's. i did buy sea king wth motor was tuned and prep'd for storage, bought for a prayer, fired on first crank and runs great. both in almost mint condition, a must see. also you can use 2 stroke oil, it smells somewhat better and performs better."
