New Member, with a question - Evinrude 2hp

I'm retired and living in Owl's Head, Maine, on Penobscot Bay. As a hobby, I do metalwork - lathe & milling machine stuff, and welding. I've had numerous boats over a 50 year period, powered by all sorts of "big" engines. Chiefly due to age, I am now down to a 9-foot skiff, primarily for enjoying the rowing around the harbor. I also wanted an O/B for it and have just bought a 1984 Evinrude 2hp single cyl 2-stroke. It looks to be in quite nice condition, but is not running properly and I want to get at the carb to clean it. My question is so ridiculously simple that I am somewhat embarassed to ask it. What is the way to remove the cowl (hood)? I see a couple of hexhead bolts underneath and a big Philips screw on top center. I assume the gas tank cap and the pullcord handle have to come off, somehow, before the cowl can be separated from the engine.

Don't loosen the big philips on top !--------Do not remove the pull cord handle !-------only 4 screws need to be removed to get the recoil housing out of the way.--Look carefully before taking any bolt out.

Thanks for the cautions.

I am not sure I understand about the 4 screws. Are they for taking off the engine cover, which is what I want to do? Where are they located? And how do you deal with the pull cord handle and the gas tank cap, each of which is too big to fit through their respective holes in the engine cover? I have the manual for this engine, on a CD, but it does not mention removing the engine cover.

Many thanks for the information, guys. Much appreciated. The exploded drawings in the Parts section of this forum are quite useful - I hadn't found them before you pointed me to them.
