Just wanted to introduce myself as a new member . We live in Naples, Fl. and boat often . A friend of a friend offered my 16 year old son a free boat a few weeks ago to get it off their property .Hasn't been run in 7 years but has title and says it ran fine before they quit using it . yeah right .

it's a 1988 18' cc with a 1998 Evinrude 150 . That is all we know .

Any way we have been working hard cleaning and fixing it up . This weekend we started on the motor . Cleaned out tank , new sender , all new hoses from tank to motor , new bulb , filters . Inspected oil tank and lines , all looked good .Changed plugs, Took the carb bowls off and cleaned them out . Hooked up the hose and started it . Water came out immediately and you could see and smell the 2 stroke oil . ran rough for about 30 seconds and then smoothed out nicely , so far so good .

After it cooled off we pulled the thermostats and the lower unit . Tonight we will replace the water pump assembly and gear oil ( old stuff had no water or shavings in it ) After reassembly we will decarb the motor . The only problem so far is the trim tilt motor is gone and the oil in the rams looks like a milk shake , ugh .

Any way have already got some good info reading thru the posts and want to thank all of you who have posted it so others can learn .

A nice little center console for FREE :cool:. That's great, I hope your son learns a lot with this rig.

Did you drain and refill the oil tank? I'd do that just to be on the safe side. Also, if you went to the effort of replacing the fuel hose, you might as well get new 1/4" line and primer bulb and replace the oil lines while you're in there. Ounce of prevention......pound of cure. This has set neglected outside in the Florida sun/rain for 7 years, you might as well cover your bases.

I wouldn't do a 'de-carb' on this motor quite yet. Instead, I would suggest you run a tank or two of fuel through the motor with the correct amount of seafoam mixed in with the gas. That will have the same effect as a de-carb without the sudden, harshness of breaking it all loose at once.

Use BRP HPF Pro gear oil and get new nylon washers for the fill and vent screws.

With your location in south Florida you should be able to find a good used trim unit and replace what you have.

you can replace the oil line with regular 1/4 fuel line and a 1/4 fuel bulb ? for some reason i thought you had to use factory stuff on that .
