I have a new Johnson 50hp out

I have a new Johnson 50hp outboard that is hard to start cold. Is this normal for a new engine? Thanks.

Carbureted two-strokes are no

Carbureted two-strokes are notoriously cold-blooded and need lots of choke for the initial start. Move the fast idle lever up about an inch. Then hold the key in (choke position) while cranking until the engine fires and then release it. Adjust the fast idle lever for a moderate idle (not racing) for a minute or two. If the engine tends to want to die just pusk the key in momentarily to give it an extra shot. You might have to do this three or four times until the engine smooths out. Then drop the fast idle lever and head out.
