"I'll try to keep this short.

I'm getting my first boat, an '84 Ciera 2450 Flybridge, for free. It's been sitting for 10 years and currently has a blown 225 A(?) (haven't yet sorted out what the letter means, but have to assume it's a series indicator that might go along with some cronology)in it.

Not sure how bad the motor is and he never opened it after he blew it up, maybe something to do with having also knocked the windshield, railing and helm off the flybridge on an underpass while he was dragging it home the same day, so I have to assume the worst.

In looking for a new motor(rebuilt) I've noticed a lot of parts compatibility between the 305 and 350, I've also noticed that a rebuilt 305 seems to run about $400 more than a 350 and I've also noticed that I'm an American and probably need more power.

So my question is, how much of the 305 will work on a 350 block and heads?

It looks like everything exhaust and cooling will swap out, but what about the rest(intake in particular)? The risers and manifolds were brand new the day he blew the motor, so they're in good shape.

I have to assume the 280 O/D will take the added 20 or so hp and I plan to get a seal kit and replace the raw water pump.

Is there anything else I should pay extra special attention to, in regaurds to the drive systems?

Thanks in advance for any help or insight, this sight seems to be a great find for someone in my position.

P.S. Please keep the sucker comments to a minimum, I needed a project like this like I need a hole in my wallet, but you just can't pass up a free boat."

also like my father told my sister when she brought home a free cat nothing is free..

anyways good luck with your first boat and it will all come together for you and you will have a great time on the water..

Replace all the rubber hoses on the S/D. Must do!!! This way you get to check your intermediate bearings and U/J crosses. Pay attention to the hose nipple on the drive that feeds water to the engine. Change it if even a little corroded.

"Thanks guys. Been doin a ton of reading over the past week and have found a lot of good info on the 280 O/D, including a couple of manuals someone was kind enough to share over at the BOC forums.

My question still stands about the 305 to 350 swap, if anyone has the knowledge or first hand experience with this, I'd really appreciate any help.

It also dawned on me today: If I increase the power output, would it be wasted if I didn't then change the gear ratio or increase the prop size? I don't really want to drop the coin on a new prop, the boat comes with 2 OE size props.

But, this doen't change the fact that a rebuilt 350 costs a bit less than a 305."
