Glad to find this forum. Never had an inboard engine before.
Just bought 1986 Regal Sebring 19' with a MerCruiser Alpha One 205 sterndrive.
Put oil, gas and tranny fluid in it. It cranks but doesn't start.
Any clues? Would appreciate any comments.

Tranny fluid....where?

is the fuel shutoff valve open?

you need to make sure there is spark at the plugs and fuel in the carb before the engine will run...

My Alpha One is a 4.3L 262 cu inch 1986 model.
I don't see any fuel shutoff valve anywhere.
It started this morning, ran for one minute and died.
So spark and timing must be good, yeah? Perhaps the carburetor needs adjusting?
Also, while I had hose water going into the adapter, it didn't come out of the propeller hub. Problem?

Ayuh,... It probably needs a new impeller,...

Where did you hook the hose up. Flush muffs on the lower unit of the outdrive? Most of the water, if the pump is working will come out of the bottom of the transom assembly.

Got it running well with advice from Bondo and Kim, thanks. A mechanic showed me that the water needs more than a few seconds to go around the engine and expel. The impeller is undoubtedly old, but overall this 1986 MerCruiser is still pretty solid.

Michael, don't take for granted that the sea water pump impeller is OK. If this boat has been sitting for a while, the impeller needs to be replaced.
Remove the the lower unit, and disassemble the sea water pump.
You can purchase a complete pump assembly, and sleep better at night.
