new gear housing issues wont go into forward

i put a new gear housing on and everything works great except one thing, no forward. i can start it in neutral and shift to reverse fine but when i try to go into forward nothing happens. any pointers? its a 1977 mercury 500 50hp

Drop the LU and locate the shifters (upper and lower) correctly.

Put both upper and lower parts in forward, take all the slack out of the lower shift shaft (turn it counter clockwise) and stab the LU back up there.
