New fuel pump seems like it’s not getting fuel.

My son has a Volvo penta 8.1 L, GSI-A in a 2002 cobalt 26 foot boat.

He just put on a new fuel pump and he said it was $590. He did not say what brand. Anyway, it’s only pumping fuel sometimes then it’ll pump fuel and then quit again. He has taken off the fuel filter that came with the pump and it is attached to the pump and that does not help at all.

Are there any other reasons that this would happen such as another hidden fuel filteror fuel screen somewhere like in the tank?

Any other ideas?

Thanks guys!

Ask him if the pump runs continuously and the fuel delivery is intermittent OR is the pump running intermittently...

From my son:

“Pump runs for a couple seconds when you turn the key on like normal, then shuts off.

With the filter off, it would pump fuel for a few key on and offs then gradually stop pumping fuel even with the pump running.

Has a backfire sometimes and also smokes a little. Just when trying to start.

Wondering if it’s a blown intake gasket.”

Thanks for your help!

Any more ideas?

Intake manifold gasket has nothing to do with fuel delivery.

EFI I assume?
Verify fuel is not being restricted form the tank. Check anti-syphon valve operation.

Need to scan motor for codes

The Fuel Pump runs for a couple seconds when key is turned ON. The FP will stay OFF when cranking if the ECM does not receive info that spark is being produced.

Put a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail, should read 50-60 psi. Pump will run for few seconds and it should also stay close to that pressure when it stops running

Measure 5V reference voltage at Cam and Crank sensors, should be 5V

Try a spark gap tester
