Hello from WA. I just acquired a 1965 Evinrude Fastwin 18hp and am hoping I might get some help getting it running properly from people on here who have a better understanding of these engines than I currently do.
Here's a description of the problem:
The motor had not been run in several years but came with an old gas tank filled with gas. I got rid of that stuff and purchased new gas and oil for the motor. I used a 1:16 ratio per the tech's advice at O'Reillys. After pulling on the rope for about 5 minutes I got the engine to fire up, but it immediately would do what I'd imagine is a backfire and die. The sound was sort of a popping "thwack".
After continued effort, I was able to get the engine running for more than a second, but still it would die with that loud noise. At this point, the engine would start out with high RPMs with help from the choke, but then bog down and struggle to maintain RPMs. Almost like it wasn't getting enough fuel or something. After struggling to stay running while the RPMs were all over the place, the engine would sputter out, but no longer is making that backfire sound.
I also noticed the water wasn't being shot from the shaft like I'd imagine is supposed to happen and the engine got pretty heated up.
I decided to give it a break because I didn't feel I was making any progress and was scared I might be overheating it.
I'm not an engineer but pretty mechanically savvy, and I'm guessing/hoping maybe the carb needs cleaned/rebuilt and the impeller, possibly the entire cooling system now that I've messed with the boat may need replacing...
Thoughts/ideas? How do I go about checking these two systems or anything else you feel may be causing this problem?
