New Evinrude owner...

Hello from WA. I just acquired a 1965 Evinrude Fastwin 18hp and am hoping I might get some help getting it running properly from people on here who have a better understanding of these engines than I currently do.

Here's a description of the problem:
The motor had not been run in several years but came with an old gas tank filled with gas. I got rid of that stuff and purchased new gas and oil for the motor. I used a 1:16 ratio per the tech's advice at O'Reillys. After pulling on the rope for about 5 minutes I got the engine to fire up, but it immediately would do what I'd imagine is a backfire and die. The sound was sort of a popping "thwack".

After continued effort, I was able to get the engine running for more than a second, but still it would die with that loud noise. At this point, the engine would start out with high RPMs with help from the choke, but then bog down and struggle to maintain RPMs. Almost like it wasn't getting enough fuel or something. After struggling to stay running while the RPMs were all over the place, the engine would sputter out, but no longer is making that backfire sound.

I also noticed the water wasn't being shot from the shaft like I'd imagine is supposed to happen and the engine got pretty heated up.

I decided to give it a break because I didn't feel I was making any progress and was scared I might be overheating it.

I'm not an engineer but pretty mechanically savvy, and I'm guessing/hoping maybe the carb needs cleaned/rebuilt and the impeller, possibly the entire cooling system now that I've messed with the boat may need replacing...

Thoughts/ideas? How do I go about checking these two systems or anything else you feel may be causing this problem?

Not sure about a tech that would advise 16:1 when the proper ratio is 50:1 for that motor.----------Check spark to see if it will jump a gap of 1/4" or more, no other tests will do.----Always install a new impeller when you get a used motor.

Thanks for the reply on possible solutions. I will get the engine pulled apart and take a look at the impeller tonight hopefully.
I might just replace the spark plugs too while I'm at it since I'm not sure how old they are either.

Thoughts on engine running so rough? Could it be as simple as not getting a good spark? That'd be awesome!

Alright, I finally got everything back together again!
I pulled the engine apart a couple weeks ago and ran into a problem with screws that were corroded and ended up having to redrill/tap the holes they were in before proceeding. PITA
So I have the impeller and new plugs installed and the engine will fire up strong but only lasts for about 6 seconds before it seems like it chokes itself out. I'm guessing something's amiss with the fuel delivery system, but am feeling in a bit over my head now...
Anymore advice?
