New Etec 90 Reliability?

I am looking to repower from a mid nineties Tohatsu 90 carb 2 stroke and have been offered a very good deal on a brand new Etec 90.

In the UK these are no way near as popular as the 4 stroke Yams/Mercs/Suzukis and price is reflected in this with the Etec being offered 30% cheaper than a Yam 70.

My worry is that any Merc/Yam/Suzuki dealer will tell me that these Etecs are a nightmare to work on and unreliable compared to the brand they sell (of course they will!) but also speaking to friends they have all heard issues with ECU's / Injectors going for a past time and spark plugs needing to be indexed otherwise I may burn a piston out??

My only experience was once owning a Evinrude Ficht 150 which was the worst engine I have ever owned so I am ultra cautious.

I am hoping that BRP have ironed out any early issues and that now any new outboard will be pretty much as good as another? There is a 10 year warranty being offered however it was pointed out that this is no good if the boat spends most of the season at the dealer and not on the water!

That motor is as good as anything out there. I would have no issues putting one on my boat. The Ficht was a bad motor but the E-tec is not.

What is the difference between Ficht and E-tec ??
The E-tec is what the Ficht should have been. Nothing from the Ficht interchanges with an E-tec. I find it funny when people say it is to complicated because it has to many electronics. 4 strks have the same electronics.

Pretty much the whole engine management system is different . This includes the EMM, the injectors the oil pump blocks have some similiarities. If you want more than that google it. I was one of the poor schmucks that owned a 150 Ficht it was not good. My friend bought a 150 E tec and everything about that motor is better than my ficht.
