New Era in Volvo Penta??

Personally (and this is just my PERSONAL opinion) this product will cause more problems than it will solve. Imagine the cost of even a "soft grounding"... If you are exclusively deep sea, maybe OK. Even in that situation, I think that many boats that would survive a "close encounter of the third kind" with a largish mostly submerged object, would sink if IPS equipped.

Bob, both Volvo Penta and Mercruiser are investing millions in R&D for this type of drive system.
Volvo's IPS has been in production for several years now.

This is Mercruiser's Zeus drive teamed up with Cummins Engines!

Even the large ship builders are giving this IPS/Zeus technology a try.
This is a small version!

Yes, I know that... and I also know that very large ships use it already, however....not all technology scales well.

More of a replacement option for straight shafts and brackets.
Ever seen what happens to the brackets when 'high & dry'??
Not to forget hanging rudders?

Far from true, you should read up on the product before making such claims, they are designed to shear off before sinking the vessel.

1) I cited that as my opinion... which stands
2) "designed to shear off"... and the Titanic was designed not to sink. As a design engineer with several decades of experience, I will tell you there are
"many a slip twixt the drawing board and reality". Absenting a published test to demonstrate that the IPS drive will shear off BEFORE punching a major hole in the hull at the aft edge of the mounting ring, I'll still be skeptical. Remember the original Volvo drives were "designed to kick up and not be damaged"... Real life published tests in the 60s showed this to not be so. When you are moving along at planing speeds and hit an immovable object, the forces involved are astronomical, if only for a fraction of a second. The ads indicate that the skeg is breakaway... not the drive, in the same sentence that describes the drive.

Again... my conclusions are just .... my opinion.

It would be pointless to further discuss, debate or even argue..... both manufacturers thought this was worthy of investing in.... so I'll reamain positive on this one! :D
