"Hey guys! I am brand new here and I have my first question for you.
I just bought my first new boat Thursday. I bought a 08 Tracker Pro Team 175 with a 08 Merc 50 ELPTO. I was told at the dealership that the 50 was a great all around motor. I took it out this last weekend and had a few probs with it. It wouldnt idle at all. The dealer stayed open longer for them to check it out for me and he adjusted the idle and tweaked the carb. The motor is running much better now, but still hesitates a little and even after its warmed up, it wont just start with a bump of the key. I talked to them today and they said something is still wrong with it, so Im bringing it back to them tomorrow for them to completely go through it.
My questiuon is this: Is the Merc 50 ELPTO truly a good motor choice? Is all these motors having problems, or is this just a few out of a bunch thing? Im looking foward to having alot of trouble free use on this thing if I could ever get it right. Please give me some info on this motor and if you own one, do you like it? Thanks so much!- Jon"

I bought the same motor for my pontoon 3 years ago. First 2 years were a dream, last years-so far this year I am having the same issues. Our marina has not fixed it yet either. I'd be interested in what the dealer (or anybody else)has to say."

"Im sure they can figure it out. There is something that probably wasnt tweaked right from the factory. Might have been built on a Friday or Monday.
I just hope that this motor choice was a good one... I recieved a 3 year warranty with the motor, so Im not really steamed about this....yet."

"John, the 50 is a good motor and one of the only 2, 2 strokes still built in North America. There are thousands of them out there and they are a super popular choice on boats of your type.

It sounds like you just got a bad motor with a few bugs in it...."
 
I took it in today and dropped

I took it in today and dropped it off with them. We will see what they find out. They are very interested in whats wrong with it and they told me that they will fix the problem regardless.

"the words "lots of trouble free use" are not in the vocabulary of an outboard engine owner my friend, they require regular servicing and maintainance to remain in optimal operating condition. If u want trouble free use buy a Kayak."

I understand that. I will have it maintained and serviced regularly.
Got the boat back yesterday evening... They said that there was a problem with the primer fuel line. He said he was getting a vaccuum of 3.5 when he should have been getting a 1. He replaced the line and took it to the river where he ran it 37mph @ 5600RPM. He said it ran like a top and idled perfectly...
