"So I finally bought a boat..17 ft with a 110 johnson vro. Haven't taken it out yet, just kinda lookin it over and tweaking this and that. By reading these forums I have slowly been convinced to bypass the vro. I have read a few forums about that and seems doable. Thing is, will I end up using more oil in the long run? how much oil does this vro thingy use. Being a first timer to boating and outboards am I doing the correct thing by eliminating the vro? Making it easier for myself? This is a great site with some extremely intelligent people, a great help for a guy like me. Thanks"

"If the VRO is working, I'd test the alarm and keep it working! The oil consuption will be similar. You may save a little depending on the year of the VRO pump. The newer ones inject more oil at idle than the originals.

With a little attention to the motor, it's easy to tell if it's using oil. First mark off the oil bottle and number it or whatever. Mine is marked off in 1pt increments. I run 6 gallon gas cans. I know the oil should drop about 1 mark for every tank of gas. Second, watch and sniff for smoke. Every non-dfi two stroke should smoke a little at idle. Third, listen! If it's not getting oil, you'll hear the difference.

Ultimately it's a judgement call. The chances of losing both the pump function and the alarm function of the VRO at the same time are pretty remote. Weigh that against the possibility of forgetting to add oil to the gas.

I'm pretty comfortable with the VRO. I test the alarm yearly, and mix the first tank of the season at 100:1 just in case. I keep a bottle of oil under the seat so if the alarm would go off, I have something to add to the gas."

"That's the main problem with VRO. You always ask yourself, is the oil level going down? What mark was the oil at? I wonder if the alarm is still working? I ruined my VRO motor on 1 tank of gas. I didn't fix the motor since the estimate was for $1700. With my new to me Johnson, I'll mix it myself, Thankyou very much! Brian P.S it reminds me of the old Clint Eastwwod movie. I bought a 70 hp johnson with the vro. Problem I had was it was feeding to much oil fouling the plugs. I decided to didconnect mine and mix the gas myself. Now I don't have to worry about using too much or too little oil and damaging motor
