I recently aquired a 1967 Fairliner sedan with twin 318's. I purchased the boat from the original owner who kept the boat in a boathouse all these years. The engines themselves have 830 hours on them. They have great compression and run very smooth. I have a couple of questions for you folks though. Please refer to the pictures below.

1: I simply can not get to the serial plate and have no idea what yar these motors are. The heat exchangers look like the later style, but I need confirmation.

2: The thermostat housing is unlike any I have seen before. Does it look correct? On the picture posted, the hose with the red line goes off to a red dot heater. The other small hose terminates with what appears to be a temp sender. Ther is however a temp sender already in the front of the block. Not sure what the purpose of this sender is as it is tied into the oil pressure warning sender. Faulty logic on the part of the previous owner? Is it somehow adding resistance to the oil pressure warning circuit?

3: I see some steam coming out from the front of the heat exchanger on the starboard side (looking at the front of the engine). The casting seems fine. Is this just a gasket replacement task?

4: The carbs appear to be the proper Carter AFB units. The factiry repair manual refers to idle adjustment scres on the sides of the carbs, but these don't have them. They do have what seems to be an air adjustment screw between the to mixture screws in the front of the carb. Does this screw adjust the idle? It appears CW lowers the idle and CCW raises it.

Any other thoughts or things I should look for?

Could be. Lots of variations.

That's the alarm system as you have deduced. There's another sensor in the exhaust somewhere. ALL OF THESE SENSORS NEED TESTING! It cost me a motor when I stupidly assumed they were working.

Could be. You need to check that out. Also, since she's been sitting so long, you need to drain, clean and refill the coolant (and change the zinc anodes in the exchangers. They look like a drain plug in the bottom.)

Correct. That's a system that works so well, it's amazing other carb manufacturers didn't copy it.

Thanks for the replies! Do you have any idea what year/part numbers I should be looking for with those zincs?

They are commonly available.

They are commonly available. Pull yours and start matching them up on marine web sites.
