New boat owner needs help

I recently bought a 1973 glastron mercruiser I/o, 165hp, my first boat I've ever had. I took out and ran great until engine got hot. I took home and changed thermostat, and bought kit for water pump. After putting lower stern back on, it fired up and temp was staying within normal range. I put in reverse and prop spun fine, but when I put in drive, it stalls immediately, didnt matter if I slowly have it has, or quickly gunned it. No weird grinding noises, just dies. Any suggestions on what to look at next? Any tips would be nice. Thanks.

The throttle cable is connected to a linkage that activates a kill switch. Usually mounted on top the intake manifold. Check the adjustment on the linkage to insure you are not engaging the kill switch when putting in forward gear.

Ayuh,... My guess is, when ya overheated it, the lower shift cable got melted, 'n now needs to be replaced...

The lower shift cable, runs fairly tight to the exhaust pipe...
