I have mercruiser 260 with onboard water system do I need inpeller in outdrive / motor is 1980 or so need new outdrive no markings on old one thank you

Hard to believe nobody weighed in. I was wandering myself. I had a 24' Sport Craft with closed cooling. The transom was blocked off in the inside. I sold the boat but wondered if it need the impeller as part of stability or anything like that in the outdrive. Building a boat now with closed cooling that will have no impeller in the outdrive. I was hoping someone would answer your question because I have the same question?

If your using a Alpha type outdrive there is a impeller in the lower unit. A Bravo type does not ,it uses a engine mounted raw water pump.
I`ll guess onboard water system means a closed cooled system with a heat exchanger, and yes need a raw pump

There are two configurations typically.

Inboard

Inboard/outboard

If you are running an alpha 1 out drive then you should only have a outdrive impeller.

If you have a inboard you will have a on motor impeller driven by belt or connected to the crankshaft.

If you have both then I would say something is wrong.

I am not aware of a alpha with a onboard water pump impeller.

Bravo's have on board impellers as do inboards.
