"I picked up a craigslist 7.5h

"I picked up a craigslist 7.5hp engine that has sat for the past five years. Dunked it in the water, and it fired right up with some fresh fuel!

Now that I know it's in running condition I've changed the oil, gear lube, spark plugs and had to clean out the carb float because it was sticking. So far, so good.

I am wondering if there are any tweaks or parts swaps that will free up a little more power?

Volumetric Efficiency is the way to get the most out of that displacement. its THAT simple pal, engines all need air in and air out. It's not that off-the-wall of a question to ask, and doesn't require a smart a-- reply."

and if you think that was a smart a$$ remark

even if u went and got 15hp from it, u would get maybe maybe 3mph more and more fuel used"
 
I got a noticeable difference

I got a noticeable difference in power by using the 98% high octane unleaded rather than the standard.

And as J-I-T states, for that 50% increase in horsepower you get a whopping 3 mph, on a calm day, on glass like water.

Oh ya, you also burn 40% more fuel at 3-5 bucks a gallon depending on where you live.

Outboards are built as light as possible for obvious reasons.

Anytime you have an outboard where the horsepower to displacement ratio exceeds 1:1, a rebuild will be in your near future. That's why you see those 98 cu in, 300 horse jet ski's launching heads and eating pistons like ravenous dogs.

Your 7.5 probably has the 12 cu in engine which makes 10 horses the practical maximum unless you want to quickly turn it into junk.

If you want more horses, sell your 7.5 and buy a 20 or 30 horse. That you will notice."
