"Just bought my first boat...it has a '86 140hp Evinrude that runs great on sunny days - but I have tried to start it up twice now on mornings after rain and had problems... it will start, but idles rough and stalls a lot while you try to get it going.

Although the rainstorm last night was a good one, seems to me running in a damp environment comes with the territory so this should not be happening. Would covering the engine help, or is this a deeper issue. My cottage neighbor mentioned a fuel/water separator. Sounds like a good idea in principle, but the same fuel worked OK the day before,...

Many thanks"

"Is this new fuel? Or did it come second-hand with the motor? I am not really sure how water would get into your fuel due to gravity based weather. Are you sure there aren't any electrical components getting messed up by the water? Like ignition parts, cables grounding out etc? I had a key switch on a dash console which used to collect small amounts of water and cause problems. My key ignition could impact the auto choke as well as magneto ignition cut-out and even drop the circuit to my electric shift during WOT. I cleaned up my electrical stuff and my mystery problems went away. This might be similar for you, but I don't know much about your specific set up. I hope this helps,
OB."
