"280 outdrive? Drain the oil.

"280 outdrive? Drain the oil. Remove the rear cover. Loosen the clamps which secure the bellows and note the position of the clamps. Loosen the two bolts and two nuts which secure the upper unit. Lift up and back on the upper unit until it comes free. The upper unit consists of two halves held together by four Allen bolts. Remove the bolts. Observe that the U joint is held in place by a single Allen screw or torx screw. Remove the bolt and pull the U joint. If the four bolts and/or center bolt are difficult to remove use a 1/2 inch air impact wrench set at about 100 lb ft. Note the O ring which is fitted to the back of the U joint. Rebuild the U joint. This will require two spiders available through a dealer or EBay. Preferably, get the spiders with grease zirks. Rebuild the U joint by removing the old spiders and replacing. This procedure does not require experience but some caution. When pressing the new spiders one can use a vice to start the procedure but use great care that the spindles of the spider fit exactly inside the needle bearings. Otherwise, a bearing can be tipped which will upset the spider alignment, jam and damage something. Drive the cups home with a socket and hammer. When reassembling use a small amount of grease on the bolts and splines. Before replacing the upper unit clamp the bellows to the unit, not the bellhousing. This will allow you to see the splines while attempting to mate same to the bell housing. Secure the other clamp, bolts, nuts and rear cover."
