Good info to be found on this site. Thought I might try to add some.
Bought a new Mercury 50FS from Cabelas and had them rig the motor on my boat, Tracker Grizzly 1648 Side Console(no choice, can't do your own install,as per all local dealers). Sold my old engine(2002 50HP Yamaha 2s) and brought the stripped down hull and trailer in. Install was done in one day and was charged $300. Purchase price was to include new SS prop, install, Mercury tach, control box, tax, etc. OTD.
When I picked it up , I noticed the engine was mounted low with the cavitation plate a good 3 inches below the bottom of the boat. Also there was a new prop that was an 11 3/8 x 12. Was told this was correct set up and had been test run in their lake. I had my doubts but I wanted to put a couple hours on it.
As soon as I started running, and planed off, water was coming over the transom. As the water came off the bottom of the boat, it was hitting the mid section of the motor and coming back front over the transom. I ran around a while(hour) with the plug out, then kicked it up for a quick full throttle run. 6000+ was not a problem, but my GPS said 32mph.
Sorry to be long winded, brought it back and now all is right. Thought I would share the set up. Cavitation plate is now just about even with the bottom of the boat(1/4 in. below). Prop is an 11 1/8 x 14. When I fish alone it gets 5700 RPM and 38MPH on the GPS. I cruise about 4300RPM at 30MPH. So far this seems to be a good working set up loaded or not.
