Neutral safety switch for 270 drive?

Is it possible to add a neutral safety switch to a 270 outdrive paired with an old-school side mounted Morse controller similar to the one in the attached pic? Or do you have to replace the entire controller? After 20+ years of owning this boat, while I always check to be sure the throttle is in the neutral position, it would be good to not be able to start the engine unless the drive is in neutral.

IF you are real handy, you can buy a microswitch and fab a bracket for it and mount it on the control where it will be activated only when in neutral.. Neutral safety switches on that era Morse controls were just that .... an off the shelf microswitch and an aluminum bracket. I have the same control and was going to do that until the time when my engine decided it didn't want to run under 1300 RPM and the only way home was to start the engine in gear rather than try to shift @ 1300 RPM.

Thanks Capt. Do you know of a part number that I can check out? Or maybe the specific kind of microswitch made by DigiKey or Mouser?

Ayuh,..... The start wire from the key, usually yellow/ red hooks to one side,.....
'n the other wire which goes to the slave solenoid goes on the other side,....
 
Depending on how the mechanics work out, if the lever to the switch is depressed when the shift arm is in neutral( how things usually work out) . then per BONDO, find the wire on the back of the ignition switch that goes to the 'start' terminal and connect it to the NO terminal of the microswitch ( its marked) instead. Then run a wire from the 'start' terminal on the ignition switch to the 'C' terminal on the microswitch.
