I made mention before of wanti

I made mention before of wanting to power up my 1996 30 hp Mariner ser# OG 19 XX XX. As far as I know all thats needed for parts is the carb and an exhuast manifold (tube) I'm haveing hard time comeing up with parts list that shows both parts. Can anyone help me out with this....Graham?

Thanks again

"Tim, exhaust plate/tube - merc part number 8246971. Will also need the gasket (27-821446).

Carb, complete - 3301-823799A44 (rope start) or 3301-823799T38 for electric start model (just a little different to allow for electric choke as well).

Or if you just need the carb repair kit - 1395-823654.

All still available from a Merc dealer..."

"Graham...do you have a link to an exploded view that shows the parts? Also would the carb repair kit upgrade (jets, etc.) the carb thats currently on my 30? Is the difference in carbs just jetting or are they different throat dia. aswell?

Thanks again
Tim"

"Tim, the carbs are all basica

"Tim, the carbs are all basically the same. There is 3 different models for that year class of 30's. The difference is in the linkages, one for pull start, one for electric start and yet another for the electric start (from the tiller handle). Aside from the linkage though, you are looking at the same carb.

A repair kit from Merc, includes new jets (almost always) as well as gaskets, seals etc.

You can have a look at www.mercruiserparts.com/mercruiser_parts.asp
(search with pictures) and then just work your way through the screens until you get your model/serial...."

Maybe i'm missing somethin

Maybe i'm missing something but are you saying all the 30 hp carbs are basicly the same or the carbs on the 30's and the 40's are the same just different jetting on the 40's? If its just different jetting that would make things alot less expensvie to switch up.

Thanks
Tim

"Yes Tim, the 30 carbs (th

"Yes Tim, the 30 carbs (there are 3 listed for your model year) are all basically the same, except for the linkages.

The 40's are a different carb, and on most of the 30's Merc's/Mariners I have researched (for guys who are looking to up the horsepower to 40 since most use the same powerhead) I have found that the reed (cage) is different also.

So if you have to totally replace the carb anyhow, you may as well pick up one for a 40, redo the reeds as well and get the extra 10 horsepower.

However, if you can simply rebuild the "30" carb, that is alot cheaper.

In my opinion, the difference in "on boat performance" is not worth the cost involved if you are simply looking to up the horsepower from 30 to 40 - but like I said above, if you have to replace, then go for it...."

"I wished you lived locally Gr

"I wished you lived locally Graham I wouldnt mind talking with you. here's what the total deal is with me wanting to power up my motor. I had in origianlly on a 15' aluminum boat that weighed in at around 470 pounds. I was running a 14p prop. I just got an 18' mod vee jon boat that weighs in at 570 pounds. I have a 13p prop on it now. This motor/ prop combo push the rig at between 21 and 24 mph. I dont have a tach but accord to the Merc book thats around where it should push a rig of this weight. The only thing is its a little slow getting up on plane when loaded up for duck hunting but I'd like to keep the top end speed and not change props to a 12p or 11p.Also when in rougher what it would be nice to have a bit better throttle response. I was figureing bumping it up to a 40hp (thats a 25-30% increase) would get me what I'm looking for. Thee's nothing wrong with the motor or carb right now it runs like a champ. So from the looks of thing to power it up I'll need a new carb, an exhuast tube and reeds/reed block. Is that correct? Sorry to be a pain but theres one around here that knows much and I do all my own work and repairs.

Thanks again
Tim"

"Tim, I think I misread or mis

"Tim, I think I misread or misunderstood your original question.

To power up to a 40, on your particular model, you need a new carb and a new reed retainer. The exhaust tube is fine.

The reed retainer for the 40 is smaller than you will currently have and most likely works like a restricter since both of the early run 30/40's in your model run used the same reed assembly.

They changed the reeds after serial 0g38xxxx (yours was an early run).

A new retainer for a 40 (part number 812879002) costs less than 5 bucks and will directly replace your current retainer.

The 30/40 for your model series look to be identical otherwise. Merc often comes up with some "weird" designs, your motor was one of them.

Between the 30 and 40 they used 5 different carbs depending on the (application). All the carbs were Walbro's.

The 30 rope start/tiller - WME 63
The 30 electric start/tiller - WME 64 (T38)
The 30 electric start/remote - WME 64 (T12)

The 40 rope start/tiller - WME 66
The 40 electric start/remote - WME 67

All of the carb models are still available and sell for under 200 bucks at a Merc dealer.

I ran your numbers through my prop calculator and your thinking is bang on. The 30 really should be running an 11 or 12 pitch.

A 40 would be near perfectly matched to a 13 pitch, would give a little better low end kick and 3-5 mph more at the top end on your particular set-up.

It's not often that I would recommend a "build up" on a motor, but in this case, parts brand new are under 200 bucks all in. To simply reprop (to an 11 or 12p) with a decent prop could cost you at least half that or more.

More importantly, I think your expectations of how it would work are realistic."

Thanks Graham that really help

Thanks Graham that really helps me out alot. I'm going to look around for parts over the next week or two and see what I can find. I'll let you know how it works out for me. Once again your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Tim

Sounds good. Your model really

Sounds good. Your model really is a 40 that was restricted down to a 30 - quite simply - Merc usually doesn't make it quite so simple.

You can drop me an email if there is something in particular you need help with. I believe I have a service manual for your model (on computer) and could send you the relevant sections....

"P.S. I now remember talking with you on another thread here (remebered when I saw you live in Windsor).

I actually am down in Windsor a good few times a year - home of the "in-laws"

Keep in touch, if you really get stuck, maybe we can set something up...."

I think I'll take you up o

I think I'll take you up on the offer of the section of that manual. I have a high speed connection so it wouldnt be a big deal on my part. I just looked at your profile and saw where you were from. Thats not that far at all. I was actually up your way a couple weeks ago when I bought the new boat the motor is on. I picked up in Simcoe and then went up to Elora Gorge for the weekend. I was wondering about the flags in your avatar. If you could send me that manual section it would be great. Do you know of a good discout parts place online on our side of the border?

Thanks
Tim

"Tim, I'll email you the w

"Tim, I'll email you the whole manual - big, but worth it.

The prices on our side of the border are almost double - I would look for a Merc dealer in the Detroit area - well worth the trip across.

Did you buy your boat from Proctor Marine in Simcoe? I use them alot since they are both a Merc and OMC authorized parts center - just don't like the prices on "bigger" items - but great for gaskets, fasteners etc...."

Thats pefect Graham. Didn'

Thats pefect Graham. Didn't take long to download at all. Yes I bought the boat at Proctor. It's used. A 2005 bought new in '06. The guy traded it in this spring on more of a big water lake boat. They sold the 40hp ETec that was on it seperately and I bought the boat and trailer. I looked all over Ontario for that exact boat and they were the only one that had a used one and new ones were going to take 12 weeks or better to get becuase they'd have to be an '08.

Thanks for the manual.
Tim

Ps...when are you going to be down this way next?

Probably be down before Christ

Probably be down before Christmas. I'll drop you an email when I'm heading that way....
