"Hi. Pulled the motor, a Mercr

"Hi. Pulled the motor, a Mercruiser 228, 77/78 vintage, from the boat in order to rebuild it. Everything's apart, but I just can't get the harmonic balancer off. I have a puller. Wouldn't budge. Thought of adding some heat, but thought I'd ask for some input before proceding.
All and any would be greatly appreciated."

"would refrain from the heat j

"would refrain from the heat just yet.
You are using a "harmonic balancer puller"????? and you do have the nose bolt in the crank????
If so, just tighten down and it should come off."

"Yes and yes and no.
Yes to the puller.
Yes to the nose bolt.
And no, it didn't even budge a hair.
I don't know. Are there set screws or any other device that secures it?
Kinda leary of using heat. There seems to be rubber liner or gasket between the outer and inner sections of the harmonic balancer.
Maybe some gentle, or not so gentle persuasion."

"wise refraining from heat -as that rubber IS the dampening component...to heat it is to destroy it.
Tap out the puller bolt threads to clean them, and use a good setup like this pic:

"When i mentioned the nose bolt ,I meant threaded in a bit to protect the nose , not in all the way.
never saw set screws used, you dont want to put any pressure on the rubber ,good chance of destroying it.puller is the only way i know."

Tighten your puller as tight as you can and then smack the puller as hard as you can with a three pound hammer. Al W.

The puller is attached as in the pic. I'll try the persuasion method with the hammer tomorrow.
I'll let you know how that works.
Talk later.

"Ok. Got the harmonic balancer

"Ok. Got the harmonic balancer off. Needed to use a 1/2" drive Johnson bar and a 3 foot pipe and a lot of torquing with an occasional smack. Scared something was gonna snap. But it eventually slipped off. I'm already wondering how I'm going to get it back on if I need to.
Anyway, thanks for all the input. Gonna start a new thread for the my next dilema."
