Need to know what this is

I have a new 2016 Mercury 4 Stroke 115HP. It has a devise mounted at the end of the upper trim cylinder pin. It looks like a Trim Sender has three wires going into the motor but i was told this is optional on this motor. I have a Smartcraft sc1000 and need the trim indicator to work. If this is not a TRIM Sender, What is it?

Does the sending unit seem to resemble item number 17, http://www.mercruiserparts.com/bam/subassembly/32205/16491/210

You may also want to try your question over on bassboatcentral.com in the Four Stroke outboard sub-forum as there are many members there that are really up to date with how the Smart Craft system works and installed as there is also a well trained Mercury service tech that is often seen answering challenging smart craft questions. Posting your engine serial number usually helps get you in the right direction too. http://www.bbcboards.net/forumdisplay.php?f=203

If the sending unit is connected already, then you may just need to calibrate the gauge to the trim settings and the directions should be found in one of the new operational manuals that you should have received when buying the engine, boat or smart craft system new.
