i bought a 15hp evinrude from a buddy. Its a 1995 model with electric start. I am not sure which wires are for the battery or which one is positive/negetive since they have been cut. Is the 2 red wires in the pic the battery wires? I just want to make sure these are the right ones, it looks like they go down in the body and not sure if these are the right ones
thanks for any help

Re: need some help evinrude 15hp

Those 2 looks like they have been battery cables. One thing is sure: They are not the original ones!!!
B+ goes to starter solenoid.
Neg to engine ground.

Re: need some help evinrude 15hp

thanks for the help everyone. those wires have to be original, there is no way anyone could have fed them into the body where they go. I still and not sure what to do. DO i hook the battery cables to the 2 red wires or somewhere else? which one is pos and neg?
thanks

Re: need some help evinrude 15hp

I think one red wire comes from the battery + and goes to the switch ! -------The other comes from the switch and goes to the starter.-Time to get the ohmmeter out , check stuff out and make a diagram . Then compare to the factory wiring diagram !!

It is quite simple to take the lower cowling off the port side to look this over.-----------------From + of the battery ( red wire ) to the start switch and then from the other side of the start switch to the starter.--------------From battery - tive you go to the block as a ground ( usually people use black for this )

I think I have my mind stuck on the two cut red wires, I'll remove the cowl to see where they go. I did a continuity test and neither went to ground, I'm sure I need to hook battery wires to the rectifier and ground, abandoning the red wires. It would sure help to have a picture how this all wires in instead of a wiring diagram in my shop manual. It's worth the effort though, it runs perfect with the pull start. I just would line to use electric start since it's there, my buddy sold this motor to me for 250 and it was hardly used since his boat has a vortex v6, this was just a backup motor

The red wire from the rectifier also goes to the start switch , same side as where the battery + hooks on.-----------If you have the wiring diagram you should now be good to go-----I think.

I take it you mean the starter solenoid and not switch?

thanks everyone for so much help.I am new here and you guys and top notch.
So where typically does the battery cable wires exit the housing?
any pics?
thanks again

what does tiller model mean?
Tiller model means you have a tiller with 'twist handle' throttle and gear shift lever in front of engine. (no remote control).
The start button is 'hidden' behind the shift lever and may only be reached when engine(shift lever) is in neutral.

i had an epiphany! lol
the 2 red wires in the pic i posted, have to be the abandoned wires for original mounting of the electric start button, the button is now(from previous owner) on the side for ease of use . I think i am clear what to do from here, ill try and wire it this weekend.
thanks everyone

ok got it wired up today and the starter does work now. Unfortunately it isnt running as well as i thought, lol
i get good spark but it doesn't want to keep running for long periods of time. now its taking starting fluid to get running and runs for a while( a few minutes) and then stalls, like its running our of fuel? My buddy said he rebuilt the fuel pump so i'm not sure what to look for next
help!

Test compression ----------------Test the spark , it must jump a gap of 7/16" or more.----------------If those are good then clean the carburetor and replace the wee hose in there.

lol
well considering i dont have to pay the 250 for it until i decide if i am going to keep it or not,its not a bad deal. if i rebuild the carb and it runs good then its worth a heck of alot more than i have into it. still deciding if i want to hassle with it or not.
