Need some advice on filter/water seperators

Hy guy I have not been on fora while due to lack of problems which is good but. Last year at the end of the season I started having fuel system trouble which I feel pretty sure was air leaks between the inboard tank and the motor [ sorry I forgot the motor is a 1984 merc inline 6 / 115 HP ] . I did trace it to the filter/seperator, it seems that the clearplactic cup on the bottom of the filter will not tighten due to wornout threads so I plan on replacing the entire system from the tank to the motor, which is where my question comes in. Is there any real advantage to the seperator with the clear cup verses the enclosed filter. I am thinking that if I go with the enclosed it elimenates one more place that a air leak can form. What is everyones thoughts I realy only want to do this once . THANKS:confused:

Profile?Location? Ethanol fuel?
The clear is better as it shows at a glance if there is a problem.
I had one and I never found water in it.It was a Racor(best)with the filter element in the first stage. It was too long for my app and only had 1 outlet.
I changed to a Walmart one.I needed one with 2 outlets(twin motors).
The filters should be changed every year and check monthly, more often with excessive use.
Start with NEW hoses and squeezie.New connectors too.
The connoctors have plastic and rubber in them and the Ethanol can melt the innards, and cause leaks and sucking air.

sorry Jerryjerry 05 I should have included all info. This is aPa.- Del boat nd sure it is ethanol fuel which I know is not good.So if I understant everyone the only reason for the clear bottom is to see if there is water easily, right. That being said I guess that I will probly use a closed end filter. And I do plan on changing the rest of the system -fuel line- squeezie- fittings, I have already changed the fuel pump on the motor at the end of last year so that should be good.
