"Well guys here is a good one

"Well guys here is a good one for ya. My father and I decided to replace the water pump, and thermostat due to the buzzer going off at idle the motor also did not have very strong water return. Now here is were it gets good Lol. I had to take the motor off the boat because I am also doing a custom paint job on it. So while the motor was off we decided to do the impeller. When I removed the motor and unhooked the linkage I made sure it was in neutral but while taking off the lower unit the linkage moved quite a bit while I was diconnecting the linkage rod going into the lower unit so I no longer know what gear it is in. Can anyone give me any help or service manual pictures on how to put this back together. I really cant believe I didnt pay more attention to how I did this plus it was a couple months ago before surgery on my shoulder so I am in a little trouble. The issues I have are;
1. does the linkage have to be in a certain gear during re assembly?
2. The linkage rod going down into the lower unit has a hook like piece on the end which came out of the lower unit how does that go back in which way does it face?
3. Should I scuff the inside of were the impeller goes with scotchbrite as there is some corrosion, and which way do I want to flex the impeller blades when I put it in the housing if Im looking at it in my hand and looking at the impeller.
4. When I pulled down the lower unit there was a bushing up near the splines of the drive shaft that dosnt slide down what is the orientation of how it goes on.
I appreciate the long read should have waited till after surgery thought I would remember how everything went....Dumb If anyone can help or has a parts schematic for the lower end that would help tremendously
Also DO I have an L drive or other?

Thank you so much for your help

"Wait wait wait... The U.S. Ma

"Wait wait wait... The U.S. Marine Force had an L with a clevis and cotter for the shifter. You reely can't mess this up. It will be easier to put the case back if it is in a gear and the prop used as a handle to turn the shaft until the drive spline catches. This old a Force is eaiser to put back if you fashion guide pins by cutting the heads off of extra bolts. If you dont the drive spline will keep missing the engine. It is hit or miss. If the impeller housing is cast without a S.S. liner (1 piece shaft) than throw it away. The impeller should be put on the shaft and then turn the shaft CLOCKWISE while you push the housing on. This way it is definatly in there the right way. That bushing was part of the seal that kept the grease in the spline. There are two pieces to that. I do not remember the orintation, but the metal collar was first."
