"Hey guys, I have a 17ft. 1989 Larson bowrider with a 3.0 mercruiser. I have a quick question on shifting in and out of gear. I have always eased the throttle lever into forward and reverse, but I have a friend who has been around boats his whole life and told me I should put it in and out of gear quickly so it won't wear down something or other (I can't remember what he said would wear down but I think he said something about gears or teeth grinding down.)Sorry to be so vague, but I just wanted to hear what you guys think. If I am doing something wrong I don't want to screw anything up. Thanks for any opinions."

"Your friend is spot on.
Put it into gear sharply. You should hear a 'clunk' and feel a little thump.
There's no clutch in there. The 'ticking' you may hear when trying to engage it slowly is little flecks of metal being torn away from the gear teeth.
When changing directions (fwd to rev, or vice versa), give it a momentary pause in neutral."
