" I recently acquired what I considered to be a neat old merc. Was told it was a 1967 (or so) 1100 SS on the back of a Avenger speedboat. I have not been able to find out exactly what the "SS" stands for. If anybody would be able to enlighten me, i would greatly appreciate it. Also, does anybody know if this motor is even remotely rare? Situation - it has a broken crank and probably only good for junking. "

" the SS stands for "solid state", as in ignition. That is when they eliminated the points in the distributor. No, your motor is not rare, there were tons of them built. If the crank is the only thing wrong with the motor, then it should be easy to find one. But, it is a chore for a person that has never did that kind of job, as there are special tools required to install the pistons/rings into the cylinders, since there is no cylinder head. "

" Red,

I've got a '66 Merc 1100SS outboard motor. Almost all parts are NLA. The crank, pistons, rings and most powerhead related parts are different on these motors. Bore is 2 15/16 and stroke is 2.3 inches. None of the later inline motors are compatible. Btw, the '66 has an electronic spark box that is triggered by points, the '67 has an all electric trigger. This configuration was available only in '66 & '67.

Good luck finding parts! If you happen to find new parts, please send me a message. I've been looking for a couple of years for new parts. I'm sure there are plenty of used parts out there.
