need little help

Got a free 1970 Mercury 4hp outboard (model 1040100) with purchase of boat. All wiring was rusted thru, so just for the heck of it I replaced with new wires and connectors. Just need to know where they hook up. Only 4 wires so shouldn't be hard. (only one I couldn't figure out was orange one from stator, green go's to coil). All diagrams I found only show one wire from stator. Motor is clean, show's good compressing and impeller is working good. Any help would be appreciated. 56 years old and never had any dealings with outboards.

Green to (positive) coil post

White to (negative) coil post

(both come from under the flywheel)

Orange - connect one end "with" the White on the (neg) coil, the other end goes to your stop switch (to kill the ignition when you turn it "off")

Black from stop switch to a good ground on the block (to complete the stop circuit)

I pray that it will make spark when you're done (seeing it's one of those infamous Phase makers). If not, get back to us.

My book shows the 1970 model 40 (4 horse) as having the Phase-maker ignition (first year it was used on the 4 horse), 69 and earlier had the Phelon.

Got it all clean to bear metal, Haven't started it yet, but both wires from stator pack a punch. (didn't think while turning flywheel by hand and holding end of stator wire). Motor doesn't have a kill switch, do I just ground orange/salmon wire from stator or would it be better adding a kill switch? Replaced the impeller and had it running a little, but died after about a minuet of so. Out of work until the end of Sept, so cannot afford to bring it to shop. Just trying to get it running and dependable enough to take Grandkids out for a little while. After I get back to work, plan on buying a larger outboard for the boat. (14' wide deep v)

kimcrwbr1, it is the stator with 2 wires off it as in your 05:21 pm post (4 coils out the side). most likely as you said, someone before me put a 2 cylinder stator on it.

Older gentleman at Marine repair shop checked my coil and told me it was bad, just gave me a used one. (Will be doing all my business with him as he was the only one that even tried to help) It started right up, but ran intermettly, seemed like fuel issue. Going today to find a new carb valve kit (needle valve). Did research online and found 5 different part numbers that are supposed to fit. .078 bore. Again, thanks for all the help, really appreciated. Learning a lot on this Forum
