I have a 1980 75hp J75TRLCSA i have just done a compleat reseal and everything is good except around the shifter cover assembly im not sure how exactly it seals. I have a service manual for a J75erlcsa and cannot find one for mine. In that book it shows a boot but in the correct diagram it has a grommet and im not sure how it helps seal once she shifter moves

There is a rubber grommet on the shift rod.-------It has nothing to do with sealing the gearcase !-----------There is an o-ring inside that cover and it keeps water out and the oil in !--------Bushing does not need to be removed to change that o-ring.

How did you do a complete reseal if you are now asking about this o-ring-------The o-ring is fitted in a groove in the cover.----The o-ring is trapped.-------The O-ring does not move !

The cover or whatever is ON TOP of the shift rod housing has nothing to do with sealing water out or gear-lube in, that cover, whatever is simply to keep debris away from the housing and also from traveling up the shift rod to the powerhead.

Within that aluminum shift rod housing, there is a brass busing. That brass bushing has a groove within it. That groove has a "O" Ring seated in it and that "O" Ring is the seal that prevents any water from entering or oil escaping from the gearcase. If leaking, that "O" Ring can be replaced without too much difficulty. Understood?

The picture showes the o ring below the cover. I tried puting it in the grove in the brass insert but during a pressure test it lifts that oring and insert up and leaks out the air. Also if you pull the shift rod up it also lifts it up.

No , no -----------------You totally mis-understand !---------The o-ring goes in a groove in the cover.--------Look closely and find the old o-ring in there !--Perhaps you need to poke in there with a sharp stick.-------Perhaps you need a magnifying glass.--Remove that o-ring and install a new one.----------If you can not find the old o-ring then hammer the bushing out to make it clear.

Ok i get what tou are saying just hear me out. I put the oring in the groove in the brass bushing then slid the brass bushing into the hole in the aluminum cover were it goes. Then pressure tested it like the manual said and the pressure pushes the brass and o-ring up or if you pull up on the shift rod the oring and brass come up with it. Should the brass be tight in the aluminum cover?

The brass bushing did not need to be removed as per post # 2--------But since you did it needs to be seated again and is a press fit.---------If it will not stay put then get a new cover.

Ok so im getting you. Mine just fell out. So you would normally pull the oring out from the bottom of the cover with a pick? Thats what your saying?

Correct.-------------Gears / bearings / shafts are expensive.-------------Best to find a replacement cover if that bushing fell out !
