I am new to boating and my question is --can i change my trim/tilt unit on my 1996 225 while it is out of the water and on the boat? Its on a 24ft.GW

I guess I'm really missing something here. To get the t/t out of the stern brackets the worst I've had to do is sometimes loosen up the tilt tube nuts and the stern bracket mounting bolts. The mtr has to be tied in the full up position and the tilt ram retracted when doing this. You can then remove pins/bolts and slide the unit out.
 
It may get out as 'Dockside' says, normally you have to 'loosen' as Boobie describes, however the safest way, unless you are properly rigged with hoists and tools is to simply 'hang' the engine by the lifting eye, remove one bracket and then the unit.
Working under a provisionally tilted up engine in such a tight space, increases the risk of personal injury to a level I would not recommend un-experienced people to do.
Do-able is one thing, doing it in a safe way is the best.
