need help

If it's actually a 9.8 then it's really easy, if it's a 110 model, they didn't have a thermostat.

On the 9.8's the thermostat cover is located on the top of the exhaust cover. It isn't even bolted down, just kept in place by a big retaining spring (kinda like what keeps the top on the fluid resevoir on the master brake cylinder of a car).

So, you just snap her open and replace the thermostat, the cover gasket and the thermostat gasket (total cost about 15 bucks of parts) and snap her closed - total time 15 minutes (that includes stopping to drink a beer midway through the job) :)

Of course it's hot--it just cooled the power head. If you can KEEP your hand on the exhaust plate when it's running, it's okay.
