"Ok last year bought a 40hp johnson 1986, it had not been run in ahwhile so the other day i had the carbs cleaned and serviced with new gaskets. Boat ran strong afterwards on the trailer. Put it in the river and it started right up. Rand it top speed for roughly fifteen minutes, suddenly lost power. Removed the cover and smoke was pouring out. The motor felt very hot, so we let it cool. It would not restart and we ended up getting towed in. Any ideas what the problem is and if it is something worth fixing."

welcome to marineengine.com!

smoke pouring out?!!......could you see where the smoke was coming from?

was the water pump working--ie tell tale spraying?

fuel mixed at 50:1?

what did the smoke smell like?

have you ran a compression test yet?

no alarms or buzzers going off or nothing?

i hate to say this too soon but it sounds like you melted your eng.

"Smoke Smelled kinda like burn

"Smoke Smelled kinda like burning rubber. Not really like smoke from a fire.

It was peeing, with no problem.

Fuel was mixed correct.

Smoke was coming from the back end of the motor mostly near the head gaskets i belive.

This motor has no buzzer or alarm

Compression prior to this was 130 on each cylinder.

My mechanic wants to take the motor apart to check the cylinders and what not is it even worth paying him to do this?"

first i would check for spark.

first i would check for spark.

2nd check condition of spark plugs.....wet -- not wet -- or steam cleaned....if they are steam cleaned then yes i would pull the head off.

3rd if all else checks ok then i would run a comp check.

burned rubber smell is probably going to be something electrical burned up.

Not really having a problem ju

Not really having a problem just a qoestion.i am playing around with a60 evenrude/ rebuilt motor/and 70 carbs/jackplate on 16ft express.i know you can dill holes below exhaust port to make it sound tough. you start with a big bit and reduce down. am i right and what size bit would you start with.

the burning smell may have bee

the burning smell may have been your heat sensors in the head melting
they are made of rubber

Do a compression check and if

Do a compression check and if its ok take the head off and check the motor bores for scoring and the head for warpage
