I have an 1981 7.5 hp mercury

I have an 1981 7.5 hp mercury outboard that has an electric start on it and I was wondering if I use a dual purpose battery will the motor keep it charged will the motor is running? If it does it would be a good way to keep the trolling side of the battery charged.
